NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release: September 13, 2005 The Altamont Public Library Card is a great bargain! National Library Card Sign-Up Month Do you search and search for the great deals? Do bargains make your day? Then check out the Altamont Public Library. If you don’t have a library card, now is the perfect time to get one. Altamont Public Library is celebrating National Library Card Sign-up Month. Getting one is as easy as stopping by the library. It only takes a few minutes and the rewards are unlimited. To encourage new members, during October 2005, the Library will give each family who registers for a new library card a “ReadStrong” gel bracelet. These bracelets are also on sale at the library for $2.00 at the circulation desk. This small fundraiser assists the Library to raise funds for book purchases throughout the year. The Altamont Public Library has been providing public library service in Altamont since 1908. We are proud to offer over 18,500 books, periodicals, Internet access, a genealogy section, DVDs and VHS movies, music CD's, audio books, Children's Summer Reading Program, meeting room offered to public, photocopier, local newspapers on microfilm from 1800, microfilm/ microfiche reader, and fax machine. A recent State of Illinois Demonstration Grant allowed the library to purchase over 700 books, increase subscriptions to periodicals, and expand our hours of service. Over 130 new patrons were able to experience the library’s services at no charge during the grant period. Over 2,000 items are loaned out each month, and over 300 use the library’s computers monthly. This past year, the Altamont Public Library computerized their inventory of books, audiobooks, etc. This allowed patrons to quickly order books through the Shawnee Library System’s inter-library loan program. One of the most exciting and new aspects of the library is the web interface. This allows patrons to request loans, renew their loans, or research. With a valid library card and a personal identification number (PIN), anyone can do the research any time of the day or night from home or office. Information is available through the Altamont Public Library website at www.altamontpubliclibrary.com. Patrons may also come to the library in person to get help in finding what they’re looking for. To learn how to make the best use of the library from any location, stop into the Altamont Public Library.
