November 21, 2007 The Altamont Public Library is sponsoring an essay contest as part of the celebration of its 100th Anniversary in 2008. The library encourages all students in 6th through 12th grades, living in the Altamont School District, to participate. The essay contest is just one of several events being planned for 2008 by the Library Board of Directors to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Library. The Altamont Library opened in March 2008 with Mrs. Mabel Jewell as Librarian and the driving force in starting the library in Altamont. The library Essay Contest subject for 6th through 8th grades is "Why I Like The Library". The prize for the best essay is a $50 U.S. Savings Bond. The subject for 9th through 12th grades is "Why Libraries Are Still Viable". The prize for the best essay is a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. To submit an essay, please attach a cover sheet with the following information: name, grade in school, address, and phone number. All entries need to be turned in at the Altamont Public Library no later than 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 12, 2008. Essays may be dropped off at the library, mailed to 121 West Washington, Altamont, or emailed to altamontpubliclibrary.com@altamontpubliclibrary.com.
