NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release:  July 19, 2007
Contact:  Sam Gnuse, Altamont Public Library Board President
Subject: July 2007 Meeting Minutes

The Altamont Public Library Board recently met on July 9, 2007. On the agenda was the status of building maintenance and repair, 100th Anniversary ideas, bookshelf pricing,  the budget, and the summer reading program.

The list of bills to be paid for July was presented.  These bills included charges for books,  utilities, computer repair, copier repair, audit fees, summer reading material, building maintenance, and library supplies.

Beth Speers, Librarian, gave a brief overview of the June’s circulation figures, which included our service of interlibrary loans.  In June, there were a total of 67 books and items borrowed, and 158 loaned through the Shawnee Library System interlibrary loan program.   Through June, there were a total of 906 library cards being used, with four new resident cards and four non-resident card renewals.  Over 1,800 people used the library during June and over 1,900 items were checked out.  Dr. Frost’s presentation on childhood health and safety was well received and many area citizens enjoyed his presentation and refreshments.

Mrs. Speers gave an overview of the Summer Reading Program.  Over 125 children participated the program, and over 50 individuals attended the June special event.  This special event was sponsored by the Altamont Junior Women’s Club who donated a part of their Cuddly Bunny fundraiser proceeds.  Attendance gifts were distributed to program participants who attended this special event.  At the end of the Reading Program, each participant was given a prize bag with items donated by local individuals and businesses and organizations.

Mason’s Masonry Restoration continues to make repairs to the exterior library building tiles.  The library staff ask the library’s patrons for patience during this renovation.  The library board is also grateful to The Cookie Jar for their patience and support during this renovation.

The 2007-2008 library budget, approved by the Library Board on June 18, was adjusted to reflect new tax figures.  The revised budget was submitted to the City of Altamont for their approval.

The 2007 second quarter web statistics were reviewed.  Web usage continues to increase and the public is welcome to let the library staff know of any information they’d like to see on the website.

Discussion was held on possible events to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Altamont Public Library in 2008.  More details will be worked out in the upcoming months.  Any interested community member can volunteer to assist the Library staff and board members with the events.  Just stop at the circulation desk and let us know of your interest.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.  For more information on the Altamont Public Library call 618-483-5457.
